At Royal Life Centers, guests participate in group therapy in conjunction with other forms of therapy. One or more of our addiction therapists facilitate group therapy and all guests must participate. Guests sit in a circle so they properly address each other. This design encourages socialization and consequently, emphasizes the commonalities of substance use disorders. It is important for guests to see that they are not alone in overcoming addiction.
With the support from their peers, guests are able to open up and share about troubling experiences or emotions and receive input on how best to cope. Evidently, discussing shared experiences can bring guests together, and mature the healing process. Our aim is for guests to generate a support network within their own community. Indeed, having a strong sober network is an integral part of recovery.

Types of Group Therapy Settings
Group therapy can be an incredibly effective form of treatment for individuals struggling with various mental health issues. By coming together in a supportive environment, group therapy allows individuals to connect with others who may be going through similar challenges and gain insight and support from one another.
According to SAMHSA, there are two basic types of group therapy settings:
- Open groups – these therapy groups accept members on a rolling basis with no end date, meaning people can enter the group at any time without missing context from prior meetings.
- Closed groups – these therapy groups have a specific start and end date and typically only accept people at the beginning of the curriculum.
Open Groups
Open groups offer a more flexible and ongoing approach to therapy. This type of group can be especially beneficial for those who are looking for ongoing support or have busy schedules that make it difficult to commit to a set meeting time each week. In open groups, members are free to join at any time and continue attending as long as they feel it is beneficial.
Closed Groups
Closed groups provide a more structured and intimate setting for therapy. Members often develop deeper connections with each other and the therapist as they go through the curriculum together. This can lead to a stronger sense of support and understanding within the group. Closed groups are often focused on a specific topic or issue with each session building up the other, requiring commitment from members to attend all meetings.
Group Therapy Topics
Group therapy provides a supportive and non-judgmental environment where guests can connect with others who are going through similar struggles. This sense of community and shared experiences allows for mutual support and encouragement, making the topics discussed throughout the recovery journey feel less daunting.
All group topics discussed pertain to important life skills necessary for healthy living and sobriety. Common group therapy topics covered in rehab may include:
- Psychoeducational groups
- Skills development groups
- Cognitive behavioral groups
- Support groups
- Interpersonal process groups
Through open, honest discussions, guests can delve into these topics that are crucial for recovery and learn skills and techniques for the following:
- Relapse prevention plans
- Setting achievable goals
- Managing emotions in healthy ways
- Effects of addiction on the mind and body
- Self-reflection and self-discovery
- Building self-worth
By addressing these important topics and building life skills in group therapy, guests are able to gain a deeper understanding of themselves and their addiction. They can also learn valuable tools and strategies for maintaining long-term sobriety.
Group Therapy In Detox and Inpatient Treatment
In detox and residential treatment, guests’ schedules are full to keep them busy. For this reason, guests must participate in various groups for five hours every day. Group therapy typically runs one hour long and is led as an open discussion. Here, guests will learn from their peers and facilitators, share their own experiences and struggles, and develop essential skills for maintaining sobriety.
Group therapy is an integral part of the detox and residential treatment process at Royal Life Detox. It allows guests to connect with others going through similar experiences, providing a sense of understanding and support. Led by professional therapists or counselors, group therapy sessions provide a safe space for guests to express their thoughts and feelings without judgment.
Group Therapy Throughout Rehab
If and when guests graduate to the PHP level, group attendance is six hours per day, six days per week. At the IOP level, the first three weeks require that they devote three hours per day to group therapy, five days per week. The latter three weeks require group participation three hours per day, three days out of the week. After that point, guests work with their therapist to determine how often they need to attend therapy groups.
Group Therapy at Royal Life Detox
During treatment, Royal Life Detox incorporates a blend of five core group therapy topics: psychoeducational, cognitive behavioral, life skills development, peer support, and interpersonal development. Additional group formats may include 12-step-oriented sessions, relapse prevention, cultural or community-based discussions, and expressive therapy groups. Guests are encouraged to participate and engage at their own comfort level to fully benefit from the group experience.
During a typical hour-long group session, our lead therapist(s) determine the session’s structure, which may include an educational segment or open discussion. Topics often center on relapse prevention, building self-worth, setting goals, exploring identity in recovery, and processing emotions. We strive to create a supportive, judgment-free environment where guests feel safe to share their thoughts and emotions openly.
